Welcome, and site news.
Welcome to this May 2013 edition of On Shed, Steam Tubes online magazine.
As ever, we have been delighted to see so many additions to our membership (1,372)
the video archive (now at 5,171), and the image library (25,851).
Thank you to all for your unstinting and enthusiastic support of Steam Tube - The Home of Steam on the Net!
The challenge with each edition of "On Shed" is deciding what to leave out! There are the usual features (video and photo highlights, this month in history, new build news, heritage lines news, Christian Wolmars column) And then there are those items discovered through the month that are worthy of wider exposure.
So this month "Memories of a Railway Man", and "Derelict London" are included.
Do take a look......
And in an effort to keep up to date with news from the current railway, the RFG s newsletter is included.....
Perhaps also, membership of WATTRAIN might appeal to you......
Whilst every effort is made to be as global as possible in our coverage, it is true to say that the UK and Europe predominate. But we are very pleased to note the contributions from Steve Mitchell and Yard Goat Images for the great coverage of US steam activity.
And in this edition we also take a look at the legendary film maker Gerry Troyna, who has kindly given us permission to feature his excellent railway documentaries on the Indian Hill Railways, and the Bombay Railway(next month!).......award winning documentaries ...and its easy to see why....
Announcing a New Alliance!
Just this last week we have been able to partner with a US publisher....
Rail Magazine......
Their expertise is the US scene.....and the coverage they provide on all matters of transportation on rails is most impressive....and certainly widens our appreciation of railway matters world wide...Hopefully you will agree!
This is the announcement they made to their readers.......
Potomac Express
RAIL Magazine Editor Rich Sampson shares his perspective on the latest news, trends and ideas in passenger rail. Includes discussion on all forms of passenger rail: high-speed and intercity, commuter rail, heavy rail metros and subways, light rail, regional rail, streetcars, trolleys, monorails, people movers and airport rail systems, along with important topics such as rail-oriented development, intermodalism, station facilities, infrastructure and investment.
Steam Tube looks forward to working together with Rich Sampson and his team, and would like to thank RAILMag for this great opportunity to work together and pool knowledge for the benefit of all our readers and supporters.
So, to this months edition of "On Shed"........

NFSA Film Australia
A Steam Train Passes(1974) is one of the most iconic of railway films.
The NFSA collection includes many other film clips showing railways in Australia through the years. We are grateful to Richard Carter (NFSA Film Australia Collection Archivist) for his kind consideration which makes it possible for us to see these historic films...
All Manner Of Trains
Made by The Commonwealth Film Unit 1962. Directed by Malcolm Otton. All Manner of Trains provides an overview of Australias railways in the early 1960s, before gauges across the country were standardised. The first section takes the form of a travelogue: from Cairns to Brisbane on the Sunlander, to Sydney on the Brisbane Limited then the Daylight Express to the border and the Spirit of Progress to Melbourne. The Overland to Adelaide is followed by the Port Pirie Express and the Transcontinental to Kalgoorlie before boarding the Westland for Perth. The second section looks at other significant lines and services - cross-country, interurban and suburban - and stresses the importance of the rail network to Australias rural areas and to the nations progress.
