Welcome ...and Site News
www.steamtu.be                  The Home Of Steam on the Net

A chance remark in early January 2009…..”if I knew how to do it, I’d set up Steam Tube” led to Andy Thompson and Peter Lewis co-founding what is fast becoming what its strap line aspired to..”Steam Tube-The Home of Steam On the Net!”

Since 16th January 2009, the single uploaded photograph, and tentatively uploaded video effort on the GWR, has become an extensive library and record of steam locomotion from the past, and preservation activity in the present. There are now about 4,000 unique videos and  20,400 photographic images in the Steam Tube library.

And from those modest beginnings (with just 2 members!) there are now 1,000 Steam Tube
members! (1,026 currently!)

We are delighted to have such an enthusiastic , courteous group of international members.

Amongst our members we are pleased to include Adrian Vaughan, a recognized authority on matters GWR and  IK Brunel; and Christian Wolmar, the UK’s leading transport commentator. Both of these gentlemen have given generously of their  expertise, and supported Steam Tube with both photographic and written contributions. Thank you Adrian.Thank you Christian.

In the early days we were especially indebted to Roni (from Austria) whose video and photographic  contributions have served, not just to inform and educate, but raised the bar quality wise. Horace Ward, an experienced ex-Fleet Street photographer, has also been generous in his  very helpful observations on improving the quality of photographs on Steam Tube.

Steam Tube is not just a photographic  site though…..our members often have the memories -in black and white photographs taken over 50 years ago- of their own involvement in steam locomotion. We are glad to have these evidences in the Steam Tube library for posterity!

The building of “Tornado”, and its career thus far on the main line and preserved lines, seems to have triggered more than passing interest in steam traction…and Steam Tube, via our news magazine and daily news digest “On Shed” & “The Railway Chronicle” follows with keen interest the latest news on new build locomotives…such as “Hengist”, the Claud Hamilton Locomotive project,  twinned with the  Australian  “Victorian Steam Locomotive Company’s V499” build, of which Steam Tube is a sponsor. Thanks to Jonathan Newton for his encouragement on this front..

Steam Tube is keen to “Put Something back”

And we are excited about our association with WATTRAIN, the World Association of Tourist Trams and Trains., (President: David Morgan MBE TD) The WATTRAIN CONGRESS in October 2012 will be the start of an even greater involvement in heritage railways and their promotion in the future.

We are especially indebted to Andrew Fowler and the Railway Herald for their support and encouragement.
