Several "firsts" feature in this edition...and lasts......
We enjoy in the Video Highlights a film from Valerio Varriale with the Special Train from Pistoia to Florence (Tuscany) to celebrate (the first 100 years from the building of the first class 685 engine in 1912. The train has been pulled by engines 685.089 and 685.196, the only two still in working order and currently kept in Pistoia Shed.
Another first was the temporary repatriation of two A4s which caused quite a stir....the NRMs proposed plans to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Mallards 1938 record breaking 126 mph run includes the bringing together all 6 surviving A4s(34 produced)....No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley,.No. 60008 Dwight D. Eisenhower, No. 60009 Union of South Africa, No. 60010 Dominion of Canada, Nos. 60019 Bittern..and No 60022 Mallard.
Further announcements from the National Railway Museum will appear at
Mallard 75 .
Here are a couple of NRM YouTube videos on the repatriation, and preparations for Mallard 75.
National Railway Museum Director, Steve Davies, talks about the arrival of Dwight D. Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada at Liverpool Docks, in preparation for Mallard 75 celebrations.
Ian Hewitt talks about restoration work that will be carried out on Dwight D. Eisenhower in the workshop at the National Railway Museum in York.
In addition, the Gloucester Warwickshire Railway had its first run over the newly repaired line..from Cheltenham Racecourse to Laverton (on 30th October)
And as for a "last"...how about this shot from 24th April 1965 of the last train to run on the Stratford-upon-Avon & Midland Junction Railway.....
4188 storms into the grade for the tough climb to Ettington with the final train. Clifford sidings have already been lifted but the scene looking towards Stratford which is now covered by roads and houses clearly shows the ministry grain store and the spire of Holy Trinity Church in the background. The weather had detiorated and the film used was Agfa CT18 which time has shown to be rather unstable on colour. The two scratches are unfortunate due to the camera I was using at the time but the image is now rather special none the less. If any photoshop wizard can improve this image please go ahead! With the winter season now upon us, we shall look forward to seeing plenty of steam (and snow!!) images......
And look out for news coming your way of a new documentary competition...........
