And dont forget our daily railway news digest The Railway Chronicle.
HS2 has dominated the news in the last month or two, and will likely continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The Railway Chronicle will endeavour to keep up to date with developments,
keeping a neutral eye on these matters.
Several steam locomotive projects are featured in this edition...well try to keep up to speed with news
from these groups.
Technology (cutting edge at the time!) is to the fore in the LMS Signalling Training films...and even more stupendous technology is featured in the Seikan Tunnel, Japan, linking the north island with the south island in our "Around The World in 80 Railways" feature.
So, enjoy.......!!

"We have now launched our appeal for funds for the major cast steel stretchers.
We expect the patterns to cost about £16,000 alone so we have set the target at £50,000 to include the machining. This will be in the printed media in January, SteamTube gets there first! We expect this to be a full 12-15 month exercise as only one part can be cast at a time as the pattern is modified for each stretcher, thereby reducing the patterns costs considerably, and spreading the time so allowing us time to achieve the financing." The Class 5AT Advance Technology Steam Locomotive Project
SAR Class 26 No 3450 - The Red Devil | ||
204 pages of Wardales eponymous 520 page book The Red Devil and Other Tales from the Age of Steam describe in great detail the modifications that were made to what had erstwhile been a poorly performing member of SARs premier steam locomotives of the German-built Class 25NC. The purpose of the modifications was to demonstrate to the South African Railway authorities that their then newly established dieselization policy was mistaken and that modernized steam locomotives incorporating technical improvements developed by Argentinean engineer Livio Dante Porta, would offer demonstrable cost savings in a country that was replete with vast coal resources yet 100% dependent on imports for its oil. On page 146 of his book, Wardale lists the modifications that were made to 3450 together with a shorter list of planned modifications that were not, in the end, incorporated. The lists are replicated below, with links provided to pages of this website that offer information on the relevant technology: Modifications that were Proposed and Implemented

The Holden F5 Steam Locomotive Trust is pleased to announce that the order for the frame plates has been placed with Tata Steel of Cradley, West Midlands. The steel plates will be specially rolled to 1 inch thick as specified on the original drawings and laser cut to the required profile. In addition to the frame plates we have also ordered the mid-frame stretcher and the rail guards (the brackets on each corner of the frames to catch the locomotive in the event of a derailment) cut from the same material.
This, as we are sure you will agree, is a major step in this project and will be a fantastic start to the year 2012, the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Great Eastern Railway Co.
Worsdell G5 Locomotive Company
The locomotive is being built in distinct units and each unit is paid for on completion and will belong to the Company from the onset. This minimises the risk to both the Company and the supplier, including our main contractor, Great Northern Steam of Darlington.
