Welcome, and site news.

Its a pleasure to give you all a warm welcome to this February 2013 edition of Steam Tubes online magazine "On Shed".

You will find the regular features here...Steam Tube Video and Photographic highlights,
news from the A1 Locomotive Trust on Tornados maintenance progress at Southall,
and a reminder to get going with your documentary entries for Steam Tubes  Mallard 75 competition.

Vintage Trains have announced their 2013 tour programme, and there is also news from the Claud Hamilton Locomotive group,(new website), the V499 project in Australia, and a new regular monthly newsletter keeping us abreast of the Hengist project.

China Railways continue to intrigue, and Christian Wolmar takes a look at the railway scene, with a particular view on the West Coast Mainline franchise (otherwise known -byCW- as the "omnishambles"!)

We are delighted that Mark Found has given us permission to show the 2002 hit show "Trainspotting", which appeared on the Discovery Channel. Enjoy the five episodes that are
in this "On Shed". More to follow, naturally.

And speaking of trainspotting, Dick Bodily looks back at his personal experiences during the Big Freeze of 1963.

Light relief comes in the exchanges between BigJig Toys and the Dft re another bidder for the WCML franchise!

Read of another development for Steam Tube..a Railwayana channel.......

And finally, Roni, one of our earliest and prolific uploaders has come up with a 45 minute epic on his Youtube channel. Enjoy it here!!

Till next month, with more news, adjustments, and more...

Tornado- The Story So Far

The Tornado Telegraph Newsletter No 39.

Tornado’s winter maintenance continues on schedule at Southall Railway Centre. The annual ‘C’ examination is well under way. In addition, the old cylinder liners have been removed and bores cleaned ready for the fitting of new liners. All motion rods have been sent to the Great Central Railway at Loughborough for fitting of new bushes;cross heads are also there for white metalling. Gauges have been sent away for recalibration. The overhauled air pump and turbo generator are ready to be fitted.

Mallard75
Whilst there is some understandable delay in the return of Flying Scotsman to the rails, another famous locomotive will feature in 2013 events!

“2013 Steam Documentary Competition”
On 3 July, 1938, A4 4468 Mallard started to the north of Grantham and headed south along the LNER route. From milepost 100 the speed was measured at 87.5 mph. By milepost 93 it had reached 119mph and things were looking good. It was around the area of milepost, number 90 that the speed of 125 mph had been reached – the record had been broken!
July 3rd, 2013 will be the 75th birthday of that record breaking run and www.steamtu.be would like to commemorate the event by running a competition.
"Mallard - The Quest for Speed"
We’d like you to make a documentary video of up to 15 minutes;. The competition is aimed at all you amateur railway videographers out there and is asking you to create a totally unique, filmed video in a documentary style. All entries must be totally filmed, edited, voiced over and finished by the entrant. The content must be totally unique footage filmed by the entrant. Documentaries found to be containing pirated content will be disqualified.
First Prize is a copy of "Great British Railway DVD; series 1 & 2" as well as 50% of the entrance fees!

The judges include Charlie Bunce (first executive producer of ‘Great British Railway Journeys’), Christian Wolmar, well respected Railway writer, broadcaster and commentator, and Mike Lee, presenter on the British Steam Railways DVD/Magazine part work..

The competition is open to all but entrants need to be members of www.steamtube, Membership is free and comes with many benefits. An entrance fee of £5 will be due for every film entered into the competition. Visit the competition ‘Channel’ on www.steamtu.be for full details, including a competition time-line, T&C’s, prizes, entrance payment methods and a piece about
Sir Nigel Gresley. It is advised that would-be entrants visit the competition channel before hand.
