Welcome, and site news.
A warm welcome to all readers and visitors to "On Shed" - the online monthly magazine and newsletter of "Steam Tube - The Home of Steam on the Net!"
In this edition the highlights of video and photo uploads have first place.. as usual..and naturally so since without these regular contributions to the Steam Tube Library ( 28,301 photos and 5,684 videos) there would be no Steam Tube!
(A word on uploading:when embedding from YouTube, make sure to check the public box, or your video will remain "private" and unviewable!)
And a special word of thanks to those of you (you know who you are!!) who have been kind enough to make small donations to help with the ongoing IT costs of running the site. Thank you.
Also in this edition we catch up with the 100trains project...several ongoing locomotive rebuilds (via links).. we take a look at some Indian Railway high speed activity, provide a link to preservation in "New Europe"(NERHT); Dick Bodily reflects on those exotically named locomotives..an education in itself to the enquiring mind...and we start a listing (A to Z) of (at the moment!!) 123 railway engineers who shaped steam locomotion, and got us where we are today...
There is also the look at the past "On This Day", and a listing of mainline steam tours for February courtesy The Railway Herald, a review of Adrian Vaughans latest book , Christian Wolmars newsletter and archive films courtesy NFSA Australia and Huntley Film Archives.
Finally, there is a project developing in Australia that may well interest you...
Melbournes Forgotten Railway.. please take a look. Well take a closer look at this project in a future edition of "On Shed"...Melbournes Forgotten Railway
So, here it is..... enjoy!

The 100 Trains Project
100 trains... so far .....
Next Up: The Americas. From Coast to Coast. To Coast?
Rail distance: 32,864km (20,421 miles) - Duration: 42 days
Starting from Halifax, in Nova Scotia (Canada), and ending with a view of the inside of Penn Street railway station in New York (US), the Americas leg of The 100 Trains Project travels from the Atlantic Coast of Canada to the Pacific Coast of the United States of America, and back again. On the most iconic, and most scenic, railway journeys in North America.
Although the Americas route (over 32,000km in 42 days) is longer than the recently completed Scotland to Siberia route (over 21,000km in 40 days), it will actually be a lot easier to accomplish, as the Americas route involves only 15 long-distance railway journeys, and just one smaller local train. Whereas the Scotland to Siberia route involved 78 railway journeys, spanning 17 countries - and presented substantial "language barriers".
The United States leg of The Americas route requires just 12 Amtrak "segments", which includes splitting the Southwest Chief into two segments by stopping at Williams (Arizona), so that the Grand Canyon Railway may be added to the route.
From Atlantic coast to Pacific coast. And back again. Follow the journey here, on Twitter or on Facebook. And watch, as the world rolls on by.
NFSA Film Australia
Steam Train Passes(1974) is one of the most iconic of railway films.
The NFSA collection includes many other film clips showing railways in Australia through the years. We are grateful to Richard Carter (NFSA Film Australia Collection Archivist) for his kind consideration which makes it possible for us to see these historic films...
