Welcome, and site news.
Welcome to this January 2014 edition of "On Shed". the monthly magazine
of "Steam Tube - The Home of Steam on the Net".The usual features appear...both video and photographic highlights from the last months uploads to Steam Tube; upcoming mainline steam tours; Iain McGeachins 100 trains around the world progress; Memories of a Railway Man; a clip from Huntley Film Archives; another iconic film from NFSA Australia;a blast into the past with "On This Day"; a larger listing of current new and rebuild projects; a look at Sri Lanka in the "Around the World in 80 Railways" feature; and Wasatch Railroad Contractors involvement with the Smithsonian and Southern Railways Car 1200.
Not forgetting important contributions from Adrian Vaughan and Christian Wolmar.
The last year has been illuminated by the Mallard 75 and "The Great Gathering" (of the 6 surviving A4s) celebrations at the National Railway Museum, York. So it would seem a good time to review Jonathan Glanceys excellent book "Giants of Steam".
And given the continuing arguments pro and con high speed rail in both Europe and the US (notwithstanding Chinas ever increasing mileage of its network) RAIL 33 (from the Community Transportation Association of America) follows the theme: The New Rail Reality: On the Right Track, and includes an article from Steam Tube" The U.S. is Not Alone: Britains High-Speed Rail Challenges Mirror Those Here"
