Welcome, and site news
A warm welcome to this July 2013 edition of "On Shed" - the monthly ezine of "Steam Tube- the Home of Steam on the Net".
It is never easy to determine what goes into each edition of "On Shed", but this month was a little easier.....One locomotive celebrated (Mallard 75) ..another retired
(City of Truro)..another being refurbished (??) (Flying Scotsman)..and others being built/ rebuilt in anticipation!
If you would like "On Shed" to give your project a mention, please get in touch..
All the regular features are in this edition...plus a contributed piece from the Churnet Valley Railway (aka English Railway), and a feature (photos and videos) on "City of Truro", the first locomotive to reach (allegedly) 100 mph.
So, enjoy!

NFSA Film Australia
A Steam Train Passes(1974) is one of the most iconic of railway films.
The NFSA collection includes many other film clips showing railways in Australia through the years. We are grateful to Richard Carter (NFSA Film Australia Collection Archivist) for his kind consideration which makes it possible for us to see these historic films...
Made by The Commonwealth Film Unit 1964. Directed by Bern Gandy. A classroom film featuring the railways of Australia. It also deals with freight, rolling stock, prime-movers and break of gauge.

Mallard 75
On 3 July, 1938, A4 4468 Mallard started to the north of Grantham and headed south along the LNER route. From milepost 100 the speed was measured at 87.5 mph. By milepost 93 it had reached 119mph and things were looking good. It was around the area of milepost, number 90 that the speed of 125 mph had been reached the record had been broken!
This , then, is the 75th anniversary of that fantastic event! And "Mallard 75" will bring together the 6 remaining locomotives of the A4 class...Mallard, Union of South Africa, Sir Nigel Gresley, Dwight D Eisenhower, Dominion of Canada and Bittern....a truly "great gathering".
No doubt, many Steam Tube members will be there! So, we shall look forward to seeing all the photographs and videos in the fullness of time!
And the recent high speed running on the mainline, has given added zest to the occasion.
So, given these extra opportunities (!!) we have decided to extend the cut off point to the documentary competition... 31st August 2013...that should give time to put together an epic!!
