www.steamtu.be gives you a warm welcome to the June 2013 edition of "On Shed".
Without your loyal support, there wouldnt be too much to say each month...but we are constantly amazed..and surprised..by the ongoing supply of excellent video and photographic material. It is obvious that you all take seriously your responsibility to
ensure a good quality to your offerings for all to enjoy!
As time goes by, we get to hear of more newbuild projects, and we are pleased to give as much exposure to these as possible. If you would like us to feature your project, and its current status and needs, please let us know.
This month we learn about another Australian project..(N441)....and notice the progress of the V499 new build. We shall learn more about this project later this month when Jonathan Newton visits the UK from Australia ..the Severn Valley Railway will be the location for our meeting....
Speaking of meetings, the SMJ (Stratford & Midland Junction Railway) group enjoyed an informal get together early in May. A good number turned up to share reminiscences and to get a conducted tour of a couple of relevant locations.
What an interesting (and specialist!) subject local railway history is!!

In this edition, Dick Bodily revisits "Trains Illustrated", and Robert G Webbs father Gerrys "Memories of a Railway Man" recalls trainspotting in 1953!
Christian Wolmar offers some thoughts on the National Audits Office view of the HS2 business plan...........
Gerry Troynas "Bombay Railway" and the "History of the GWR"(from Huntley Film Archives) offer insight into the people who keep the railways going.....
And finally, we take a look at a railway auction........perhaps the very mention of this will get us rushing to our lofts/garages to search out the railway memorabilia that might just be worth something. Well, valuations cost nothing....so why not follow
up and speak to an expert or two on the subject......

NFSA Film Australia.
A Steam Train Passes(1974) is one of the most iconic of railway films.
The NFSA collection includes many other film clips showing railways in Australia through the years. We are grateful to Richard Carter (NFSA Film Australia Collection Archivist) for his kind consideration which makes it possible for us to see these historic films...
Journey Of A Nation (1947)
Made By the National Film Board 1947. Directed by John Heyer. Although it was commissioned as government propaganda, master documentary filmmaker John Heyer has transformed this film about the standardisation of rail gauges into a heroic poem to the nation. When the film was made, there were no less than five changes in the size of rail track between the mainland states. This meant that at each break, all passengers and goods - even elephants - had to be offloaded and change trains. Journey of a Nation puts the case for a uniform gauge throughout the country, emphasising the economic cost in times of peace and the possible threat to security in times of war. The rail would help to connect Australias far-flung settlements and break down the isolation of the outback.
