Welcome, and site news.
Welcome to this March 2013 edition of On Shed, the monthly online magazine featuring the best of video, photos and features from Steam Tube- The Home of Steam on the Net!

There are impressive videos of recent steam rail tours in the UK...and we have been able to obtain permission from NFSA Film Australia to show a digitally enhanced version of the iconic "A Steam Train Passes" (1974)

Hopefully, this will whet your appetite to produce a 10-15 minute documentary for Steam Tubes "Mallard75" Documentary competition. (Details included in this edition of "On Shed")

"Tornado" is coming to the end of winter servicing, and should be back in action on 9th March 2013.

For our "Around the World in 80 Railways " feature, a summary of the recent BBC
series "Great Continental Railway Journey" with Michael Portillo.
The 1913 Bradshaw he uses paints a very different picture from the Europe we now know.....
And Christian Wolmar reports on his trip along the TransSiberian...from Vladivostock to Moscow...this was an essential trip in preparation for a forthcoming book on this very subject.

Mark Found and Mark Collins "Trainspotting" series - originally aired on Discovery channel some years ago - is included in this edition  of "On Shed".

And we are pleased to introduce Alan Cliff...a writer of some experience, and known to railway modellers through his Locks Siding articles.....and known also for his Jack the Station Cat books for children....

WATTRAIN (World Association of Tourist Trams and Trains) is a worthy organization for those interested in supporting heritage projects and institutions around the world. In a few weeks, there will be opportunity to download 3 days worth of presentations from the inaugural WATTRAIN Congress at the NRM York in October 2012. Watch out for more details as they become available.

And please feel free to make use of our specialist Railwayana section. You never know what value may be attached to railwayana items that you may have in your loft..or elsewhere!

This is a short video of extended interviews from the Story of Steam project, 2 years ago.
Interviewees were asked what some of their best memories of the railways and steam were. Unfortunately, there wasnt a suitable place to fit them into the original film.

Originally I shared this little bonus videos with the people who helped with the project. However, Ive recently decided to share these around the world as well - partly to show that Safir Group is still around.

It is unfortunate that weve been unable to make any new projects. But... We do have some ideas on paper and on the shelf. Hopefully this year we may be in a position to create something new so stay tuned!

Thank you to everyone who supported the videos A Story of Steam and Driving the APT. The feedback was overwhelming and most surprising.
Hope you enjoy this little bonus video.

A Steam Train Passes(1974)
(Kind permission NFSA FILMAUSTRALIA)

Generally regarded as Australias finest railway film and winner of many awards the world over, A Steam Train Passes is a nostalgic, imaginative essay on one of the majestic but now retired C38 class steam locomotives. This fine locomotive has been restored at the Newcastle State Dockyard. The documentary was filmed on one of its final journeys from Sydney to a series of country railway stations. Made by Film Australia 1974. Directed by David Haythornthwaite.
"A Steam Train Passes has been posted on You Tube by other individuals from VHS or other poor quality copies without permission. Our version has had some restoration work done and a higher quality transfer to compressed digital formats in order to try and convey the true 35mm film quality of this great film." Tornado- The Story So Far

Tornado’s winter maintenance continues at Southall Railway Centre.
The cylinder liners are fitted;pistons are in and covers fixed. The buffer beam is fitted and being painted. Slide bars have been ground and fitted;the motion is about to follow. A steam test is scheduled for 25th February. If all goes well, a test run will take place on 5th March.
So Tornado should be ready just in time for 9th March! (Courtesy: Tornado Telegraph)

Mallard75

Whilst there is some understandable delay in the return of Flying Scotsman to the rails, another famous locomotive will feature in 2013 events!
