Dead Mans Hand Side Street Building 2

Dead Mans Hand Side Street Building 2

I followed up my last little 4Ground assembly with a slightly bigger one.  This time it was the second single storey side street building:

Assembly was a fraction more complicated than the previous one as this one has a working roof hatch.

Here are a few pictures of the finished building:

And here it is with the first building, the wagon and the outhouse:

Fun With DecoArt Paint Part 2

Fun With DecoArt Paint Part 2

Yesterday, I explained that I was asked to use DecoArt paints in a craft competition.  I had decided to use the paints in a group of projects for a table setting.

I shared two of the projects yesterday - the pedestal bowl and candlesticks -  so today, Ill show you the rest.  Lets start with the tablecloth.  I purchased an inexpensive one at Christmas Tree Shops and picked a DecoArt paint in Indian Turquoise -

Then, I found a stencil (it was leftover from my coffee table makeover) -

By the way, I thought that this was one of the easiest stenciling projects I have ever done.  I definitely plan on doing this again - what an inexpensive way to have a custom tablecloth!

And since I was on a stenciling kick, I went ahead and stenciled  some dollar store plates.  This time, I went back to the Calypso Blue Gloss paint -

Again, pretty easy.

With all of that blue and white on the table, it was time to add a punch of color.  As in my inspiration picture, I added some orange.  First, I found a bunch of wooden napkin rings at Salvation Army for $1.  And I painted them with Bright Orange Gloss paint -

And I used the same paint on these $1 spheres that I found at Christmas Tree Shops -

I placed them in paper cups and painted one side at a time -

And I ended up with this -

So to wrap it up, everything you see on this table has been painted with DecoArt paints.  And even though I took on this project as a craft competition challenge, I had a lot of fun with it.  Now I have to get back to my regular house projects!

Ive share this project here -

4Ground Main Street Building 2

My final 4Ground Dead Mans Hand building (for the moment!) is also my first two storey one - Building No. 2 in their Main Street set:

With a Foundry figure for comparison

Incidentally the darker weathering on the upper floor isnt quite so pronounced in normal lighting.

Shed Skin 0 2

Shed Skin 0 2

I have just released version 0.2 of Shed Skin, an experimental (restricted) Python-to-C++ compiler. It comes with 7 new example programs (for a total of 40 example programs, at over 12,000 lines) and several important improvements/bug fixes. See here for the full changelog.

The new example programs consist of Disco, an elegant go player (see my previous blog post), a larger Voronoi implementation at 800 lines, a TSP algorithm simulating ant colonies, a nicer neural network algorithm and three compressors (Lempel-Ziv, huffman block, and arithmetic).

Other than bug fixes for these programs, this release adds some important optimizations. First and foremost, inlining was greatly improved, resulting in potential speedups across the board. Second, loops such as for a, b in enumerate/zip(sequence[, sequence]) should now be dramatically faster (also inside list comprehensions), by avoiding allocation of intermediate tuples. Finally, basic list slicing should now be much faster.

Shed Skin 0 0 2 Easy Windows OSX Installation

Shed Skin 0 0 2 Easy Windows OSX Installation

Shed Skin 0.0.2 is up on SourceForge. It should install easily on Windows 2000/XP and on OSX. Please give it a try and let me know if there are still some problems.

If you would like to help me improve Shed Skin, please send me small code snippets, preferrably extracted from real-life use cases, that the compiler has problems with.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me out, especially Khalid and Luis on python-list, and Denis de Leeuw Duarte right here in the street :-)

Update: 0.0.3 has also been released, with improved support for builtin functions, bug fixes and a Windows package of only 3 MB.

Update: Were on a roll, with 0.0.4. Many improvements again; added several interesting test cases (thanks to bearophile!): convex hull, n-queens problem, pascal triangle and ascii mandelbrot.

2 Raised Beds Finished at St Marks

2 Raised Beds Finished at St Marks

Today at St. Marks Lutheran in San Francisco we finished two of the raised beds that will be at the site. This garden will primarily be tended by the residents at Martin Luther Towers, a senior living facility, so we want to make sure the garden could happen at a comfortable height and limit the amount of bending and squatting that would be needed. It has also been designed to be accessible for individuals in wheelchairs and using walkers.

The tall bed you see above is at a comfortable height for gardening while standing. The smaller bed will be pounded down in the sand and filled with dirt for people to garden while they are seated. Click here to see the garden plan for this site.

If youd like to learn how we built this beds or just help at the St. Marks garden, we hope youd join us next Sunday (April 25th from 1-4pm) when we finish the rest of our beds.

Shed Skin 0 9 2

Shed Skin 0 9 2

I have just released version 0.9.2 of Shed Skin, a restricted-Python (2.4-2.6) to C++ compiler. This is the second maintenance release since 0.9, so no new major features were added.

The biggest improvement is probably some optimizations for the array module. Other than this, the changes are mostly unrelated minor optimizations and bug fixes. Please see the release notes for more detail.

Three nice new examples were also added for this release, bringing the number of examples to 67, with a total linecount of about 17,000 lines (sloccount): a "stereo vision" program, and two Rubiks cube solvers.
