Candied Bacon I Pinned It And Did It!

Candied Bacon I Pinned It And Did It!

I really love Pinterest.  Its such a great resource for new ideas and recipes.  As a matter of fact, before I go any further, did you notice my new sidebar Pinterest gadget?  Now, you can see my latest pins!  Or, head right over and follow me on Pinterest!

Anyway, back to this recipe.  I pinned this Candied Bacon recipe a while back and wanted to give it a try.  Mmmm bacon.  That was pretty much all I needed to hear.  Every Some weekends, we have a big breakfast with bacon.  And I sort of look forward to it.  Maybe a little too much.  But its bacon so Im not even going to apologize...So when I came across this Candied Bacon Recipe from Recipe Girl, I was curious.

This is super easy to make.  There are only three ingredients - bacon, brown sugar, and cinnamon.  You can get the whole recipe from her site but it basically involves coating the bacon in the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture and baking -

Take note - we only made a few slices - just in case we werent fans.  This is bacon.  We dont want to mess it up.  :-)

Ok so what did we think?  Yum.  It was really good!  Much better than the time we tried to dip bacon into melted chocolate (that was just wrong, I know, but its bacon and chocolate - who knew it could go so wrong...).  Adding the brown sugar and cinnamon gave the bacon a different texture and definitely added some sweetness.  Id share a beautiful after shot but we ate it too fast to get one.  It was that good.  A new favorite around here.

Thank you Pinterest!

Master Bath How We Did It

Master Bath How We Did It

Yesterday, I finally shared my new master bath.

I love this room.  It feels very luxurious.  And its quite an improvement from the original -

Today, Id like to share some of the steps in this transformation.  It was a lot of work - but well worth it.  Lets start with some background info.  Craig and I bought a really ugly house on a really beautiful street about six years ago.  We got a great deal (because it needed so much work) and planned from the beginning to remodel every room.  And while some rooms just required wallpaper removal (ok just about every room) and paint, some rooms required much more.  So, we tackled projects based on our schedule, money, and subs availability.  We are very fortunate to have good friends with amazing talent to help us.

This bathroom was a high priority to us because it was completely unusable.  There was no shower and the sink had a leaky faucet.  That meant that all six of us were sharing one bathroom (which btw is still not remodeled - and kinda ugly...with a blue toilet...).  We had come from a house with only one full bath, so we were used to sharing, but part of the reason for moving was to have a little more space.  Unfortunately, other, more pressing house stuff kept bumping this bathroom down the to-do list.  And it sat in this state for a few years. {hides head in shame}  But, there were more reasons for not getting to this bathroom sooner - I didnt know how to fix it.  Craig and I drew up plan after plan.  We just couldnt decide what would work best.  Because this is a larger home on a nice street, we knew our decisions would impact our resale value. This home would eventually be competing with high-end homes - complete with large master bathrooms.  We had to be careful not to be too frugal with our design and materials.  And we needed to balance all of that with our needs.  The bathroom had to be functional for us.

After giving it a lot of thought, we finally came up with a floor plan.  We tried to keep the fixtures in the same locations as much as possible (to save on costs), but most things were moved a smidge.  First step - demo.  Craig and I did all of that.  We removed the toilet, sink, tub, tile, mirrors, drywall, and floor.  {Thats a great way to save money.  Its a lot of work - but not difficult work.}  Why did we remove the drywall and floor?  We wanted to insulate the room.  Its on the "weather" side of the house and could get cold in the winter.  We also needed to level both halves of the room (the previous owner had raised the floor to accommodate the huge tub - it left the room feeling small and cramped).

You can see the step in the picture above (to the left of the sink).  We wanted the room to be on one level (because this was kind of crazy).  Anyway, fast forward to demo and insulation, and we had this -

Thats the same view (where the pedestal sink used to sit)

This is the view towards the toilet.

And this is where my new shower is about to be built.  Goodbye ugly brown tub!

You can see that the plumbing is already in place at this point.  We did hire a great plumber to hook us up.  It was a very complicated job (Ill give you the whole run-down on the shower in another post - it is really awesome).

Now it was time to put it all back together.  Drywall and cement board went in.  And we had pros for this step too.  I wanted to make sure that there were no water problems down the line - and there havent been any.

The shower - with bench.

The vanity area - now ready for two sinks!

And a long shot - the shower is straight ahead (obviously) and the vanity will go in to the right.  Also take note of the floor - we put in radiant floor heating.  It was a total splurge.  But we felt it was necessary to combat our cold winters (marble floors would be very cold without it).  And, remember, we were trying to add some luxury so we could compete in the resale market.

Next step - tile.  I chose a polished marble.  I thought it was very spa-like and beautiful.  It was also a splurge.  And since I had never tiled anything, I hired that out too.  It took two men about five days to do the job.  They did a great job -

I love the subway pattern - its timeless.  And I chose a 1x1 for the shower floor as well as an accent on the wall.

The bench and wall caps are granite. I tried to find a slab that would match the marble - so that the transitions wouldnt be jarring to the eye.

We then ordered a custom glass enclosure.  And if youre wondering, yes we did shower in here before the glass came.  The shower is pretty big, so there wasnt much water splashing out.  ;-)

We had a little help installing the vanity (I cant lift heavy stuff anymore due to a herniated disc) and countertop (made from the same slab of granite).

There were still many small details left - finding a vanity mirror (we ended up ordering a custom mirror because the size was so awkward), putting in recessed lights, installing an exhaust fan, tons of painting, adding a vent cover, etc.  I think those details were the longest part of the remodel! But now its finished - and we couldnt be happier about the end result -

Heres a quick recap -

So, I hope that helped a little.  The remodeling process was long - there were many steps - but we love our new bathroom.  It works well for us - and we think it will be a great selling feature when we decide to move.

Now, we need to tackle that last bathroom (and get rid of that ugly blue toilet)...

Use pressure-treated lumber while building the sheds flooring frame, which includes the mud sill, floor joists, and border band joists. Untreated building lumber may cost much less but in time, it is going to rot. For the sheds floor boards, use 3/4-inch-thick exterior-grade plywood. If youd like a little more rigidity, install 3/4-inch tongue-and-groove plywood. It costs more, but the edges in the sheets lock together. And if you live in the area with abnormal moisture, consider using pressure-treated plywood, which is much more weather-resistant than exterior-grade plywood. Whatever plywood you use, fasten the idea down with 2-inch-long gal decking screws, that happen to be rust-resistant and hold much better than nails. Another way to stop water from decaying your shed is to construct it at least 6 ins above the ground. That way, fresh air can distribute underneath and prevent dampness from accumulating generally there. Leave at least 3 feet of open up space around all four factors of the shed. Building too close to trees, shrubs, or fencing will block sun rays and wind, as well as the shed will remain damp. (Mold and mildew hate sunlight.) Plus, having that will extra clearance space makes it much easier to paint or repair a new building. Framing the roof in the standard manner-with individual rafters, ridge aboard, and collar ties-can become challenging for novice DIYers. An easier strategy is to build roof structure trusses on the floor deck, and then raise each truss in place after the walls are usually up. A roof structure truss is simply a prefabricated assembly of two rafters attached to a collar link or ceiling joist. The actual truss parts are usually placed together with plywood gusset plates that are glued as well as screwed across the bones. Trusses are typically spaced Sixteen inches on heart, and positioned directly above a wall stud.

If youre like the majority of homeowners, you know that there isnt any such thing because enough storage space. You will find theres limit, after all, towards the things you can squirrel away in your cellar and garage. That which you really need is a back garden shed--one large enough to house a collection of outdoor power tools whilst providing organized area for everything from rakes and also shovels to plant food and fuel. Theres 2 choices when it comes to building a wooden garden shed: You can get a kit--and put up with the manufacturers choice of supplies and layout--or you can design and style a structure to match your own particular tastes and needs. This approach may cost many take longer, but its the easiest method to get what you want. There was in mind a basic Being unfaithful x 13-ft. shed designed with decent materials as well as conventional framing techniques. Material costs for project came to about $2400.

Hang it all!

Hang it all!

So what do you do when you want a very workable, hardworking space in a VERY small area?

The Shed of Reality does double and triple duty for me...and then some.  Its a studio, a retreat, a place to entertain, make music, make art, make videos.  Its an escape.  Its a mini-vacation.  Its a place of healing, and a tiny yoga ashram, a room for meditation.  A place for a private chat.  I even put up a friend there overnight once.  As the subtitle of this blog puts it, its a place called sanity...with a nice cuppa tea and a good book!

With such limited floor space...a bit less than 100 square feet--a whole LOT of stuff climbs the walls.  Book cases, of course, and shelves.  Windowsills hold a lot.  The space between the rafters are used...and here are some of the many ways to hang things up weve pressed into service, some as simple as a nail, some wonderful finds from the thrift store...

Love the antique coat or hat hanger...it works great for cups and small pots in the kitchen corner.

A sturdy hand-forged hook holds a tea towel, a small skillet and the yellow teapot my sis gave me 40 years ago...

Joseph created the broom hanger...and a smaller broom hangs from a nail to the right--along with my Audubon Society bird call!

This cool double hanger was in an old armoire, hidden from sight.  Ive got two more to put up somewhere...

A handy double hook matches those in the closet of my 100 year old house...it was a gift from a friend.

Nails work just fine...this is the dustpan that hangs on the wall, below a window.

Shaker pegs hold music CDs in a basket and my old tambourine... the shelf above holds odds and ends.

This end of the Shaker peg shelf is over my desk, and holds necessary art supplies

Push pins still work, and so do cork boards!

A hand forged nail is strong enough to hold a willow magazine rack full of sketchbooks and watercolor blocks.

A cup hook holds the lightweight Japanese lantern...

Yep, another nail holds the dishpan...

Even the doorknobs are pressed into service, keeping the floor relatively clear for foot traffic!

It all works, and is very flexible...I can always hang something different wherever I decide to, or put up another nail--the fact that we used thin wooden underflooring left over from another project instead of drywall makes putting more nails up a piece of cake!

Oh yeah, and heres the storage between the rafters over the big French door.  I put stuff up there I dont need often, because I have to climb up on a stool to reach it.

Im still planning more shelves and such, but this is a good start after a years hard use...

Homemade Body Scrub I Pinned It and Did It!

Homemade Body Scrub I Pinned It and Did It!

The winter months can be tough on my skin.  And although we have had a mild winter, I still have the same dry skin that I usually have during these months.  Enter Pinterest.  I searched for a homemade body scrub to rejuvenate my hands, elbows and feet.  Heres what I found -

This is a Vanilla Brown Sugar body scrub.  And it is awesome.  There are only four ingredients - so its super easy to put together.  Stephanie Lynn from Under The Table And Dreaming created this recipe.  Head over to her blog to get the details.  Its so worth it.  My skin feels so much better now.  Even my husband tried it.  (He loved it too.  Just dont tell his friends.  They might not understand.)

What did I love most?  Its a lot cheaper than store bought scrub.  Yay!  And it smells great.  Im keeping it in a Rubbermaid container in the bathroom - just so I can use it every day.  Goodbye dry winter skin!

On-grade foundations would be the easiest to build because they dont require digging post holes or perhaps pouring concrete. Instead, theyre built directly on top of the ground. On-grade footings - sometimes known as floating foundations are usually constructed with solid-concrete obstructs laid out in evenly spaced rows, or along with parallel rows of large, pressure-treated timbers (aka skids). Every time, the blocks or even timbers are flattened and then used to keep the wooden floor body. On-grade foundations are suitable for small- for you to medium-size sheds up to with regards to 200 square feet. For your 10-by-16-foot shed, Id advocate using twelve 4-by-8-by-16-inch solid-concrete prevents arranged in 3 rows of four obstructs each. But again, make sure to get approval through the building department prior to starting work. Larger sheds require a permanent or "frost-proof" groundwork, which extends down to the frost range. This is necessary to provide the proper support and also to protect the building from ground movement brought on by seasonal freeze/thaw cycles. Long term shed foundations are normally built by excavating down to the ice line and serving concrete footings, piers or pieces. Another option is a centuries-old constructing technique known as pole-barn design: Holes are dug down to the snow line, then high round poles or perhaps square posts are positioned into the holes along with used support the flooring frame, walls and roof.
