Last day of summer

Last day of summer

I cant believe it is here - the end of February already. There was a tinge of autumn in the air this week, and the shadows are longer, but today was a perfect, sunny day. In the evening we took the dogs down for a walk and swim down at the river. I thought it was worth a few happy snaps.

WSS Schombergs Regiment of Horse

WSS Schombergs Regiment of Horse

The regiment was originally raised by William Cavendish, 4th Earl of Devonshire (later Duke of Devonshire) in his home county of Derbyshire and neighbouring Nottinghamshire - they were named Cavendishs Horse or alternatively the Earl of Devonshires Regiment of Horse.

In gratitude for their loyalty during the Glorious Revolution, by Royal Warrant dated 31st December 1688, the new King William commissioned the Earl of Devonshires Regiment of Horse to form part of his regular army. In August 1689, the Regiment shipped to Ireland in response to James II landing there with an army. In Ireland, the Earl of Devonshire ceded the Colonelcy of the Regiment to the Count de Schomberg, son of the armys commander the Duke of Schomberg.

Schombergs Regiment of Horse formed part of the right wing of Williams army at the Battle of the Boyne (1690). The Regiment returned to England in 1691. 1692 saw the Regiment shipped to Belgium, where they fought in most major battles including the Battle of dOtignies (1693) and at the Siege of Namur (1695). In 1697, the Regiment returned to England and their armour was placed in storage.

After ten years of comparative peace in Southern England, the Regiment crossed the Channel once more in 1702 to join Marlboroughs army in Belgium for the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). Marching to Germany, they fought at Schellenberg and Blenheim (1704). At Blenheim, the Regiment fought with distinction and lost a number of officers and men, with 56 horses killed. Fighting minor actions throughout the campaign in Holland, Germany and France, the Regiment fought the Battle of Ramilies in 1706.

Using Shed Kits Instead Of Building a Shed From Scratch

Using Shed Kits Instead Of Building a Shed From Scratch

If you are planning on building a storage shed, make sure you do some homework first. If you are a carpenter or experienced handyman you have the advantage over the novice, in a few ways. You will be able to determine what would be best for you, either using a shed kit or building from scratch. With your experience your have more options based on your knowledge.

You novice builders have the same options, but it’s a matter of what would be the best for you. It really would be worth your while to check out the wide range of selections that are available.  I know, you really wanted to build this from scratch, and maybe feel like you’re cheating if you use a kit. On the contrary, you are making a wise decision, and besides someone has to still put it together, plus you can customize it. It’s that overall finished look that a person takes pride in, not in how many pieces of wood they had to cut.

These prefab storage units give you many options and have lots of advantages. First of all, you can have a choice of materials such as wood, vinyl or metal. If you were to build the shed from scratch, you probably would only be able to use wood, if you didn’t have any knowledge or tools to work with vinyl or metal. With some shed kits because of the way they are constructed you don’t need to worry to much about insulating, because of the way they are constructed. So that eliminates your problem of having to work with insulations.

If you purchase one of the self locking units, then you don’t have to be concerned about installing rafters, which is great, because it also gives you more usable space on the inside. You never have to worry about warping provided you have put it together properly.

Remember I said that you could accessorize it? In other words add your own creativity to it. For example, you can plan where you want the windows to be. You could even choose to put in skylights which not only is practical ,it modernizes the décor as well. What you want to do, and with what accessories are available to you, depends on the style of shed you are choosing, plus the material. If you are accessorizing, it is usually an added expense.

You will be pleased with how simple it is to erect one of these sheds when you buy the package. There are so many advantages to it. For example.

-All the material comes with it, There’s no running around trying to find everything you need
-You are not restricted to style because of your limited building knowledge
-Your choice of material allows you to choose something that will blend in and enhance your home and property
-They are sturdy, durable and a real bonus is they are maintenance free
-If your needs grow, and you need more storage space then you can either add an addition to the existing one, or purchase another one the same.
-There are no hidden costs. Everything you need is in the package and paid for at the time of purchase., so you know what its going to cost you.
Although remember if you don’t buy one that comes with a base, you will incur extra costs with that, plus don’t forget about the accessories.

Mourning the loss of another beautiful hen

Mourning the loss of another beautiful hen

I lost another poor girl to a grey goshawk today and feel very sad about it. There was squawking from the direction of the chook shed and I looked out the window to see something white in the driveway... oh no. By the time I ran downstairs and down the driveway, it was too late. The goshawk flew off, but the hen was dead. Now Ill need to keep the chooks locked up in their yard, as no doubt the bird will return tomorrow. Nature sucks sometimes.

Dogs of Franklin

It was lovely to see all the dogs out and about during last weekends Focus on Franklin festival. Here are photos of just a few of them... and not our own dogs this time. A nude dogs of Franklin fundraising calendar has been suggested... there are certainly plenty of photogenic models available to pose.

Dog squad on duty at Taste of the Huon

Dog squad on duty at Taste of the Huon

This year, members of the Huon Valley Dog Walking Association volunteered at the Taste of the Huon for the first time. Dogs are not permitted at the festival, for hygiene reasons it says on the signs at the ticket booths. In previous years there were a few dogs left in hot cars who needed to be broken out by police, perhaps by people who didnt know about the no dogs policy until they got there. So this year we offered to patrol the car parking areas for any dogs in distress. Im happy to report that there were no such issues this year, although this lovely girl was chained to a fence all day Sunday and we kept returning to disentangle her leg from her chain and make sure she had water.

On Monday afternoon, our group was on the clean team, making sure the tables were clean, rubbish was in the bins and the bins were emptied promptly. It was a fun day actually and good exercise! The organisers did a great job and the festival was very busy, with lovely weather, great food and drink and entertainment drawing a record-breaking crowd of 14,000 people on Sunday and almost as many on Monday. On Sunday, David and I got there in time to have lunch. My oysters from Bruny Island, beef pie from Geeveston, Inn Cider from Margate and salted caramel ice cream sandwich were delicious.

Shed Skin 0 0 10 Summer of Code 2006

Shed Skin 0 0 10 Summer of Code 2006

I have just released Shed Skin 0.0.10. besides several important bug fixes (see test 161), it contains many new error messages for unsupported features and dynamic (sub)types. this should make it much easier to try out Shed Skin and work around basic problems. please try it out and let me know about any problems/successes ^^

in other news, a Shed Skin proposal has again been accepted in this years Summer of Code. the student will investigate memory optimizations more deeply than I have done for my thesis, and implement both a stack allocation and static preallocation technique. we expect to start discussing the topic on the shed skin mailing list in the coming weeks.

finally, phillip hassey (also a Python SoC mentor) suggested an interesting idea: to automatically create *_.py files from pure C++ library header files, so compiled code can directly use many C++ libraries. this shouldnt be too difficult (the header files contain all type information), and has very interesting potential.. please let me know if youd like to work on this!

I have been slowly progressing the second phase of my War of the Spanish Succession project and have just finished another English regiment to add to my collection.  This one represents the Queen Dowagers Regiment of Foot which only saw action in the Low Countries early in the war, in particular serving in the defence of the fortress of Tongres in Flanders after which it was awarded the title “Royal”, and mottoes “Pristinae Virtutis Memor” and “Vel Exuviae Triumphant”.  It then saw more action in Spain.
