WSS Schombergs Regiment of Horse

WSS Schombergs Regiment of Horse

The regiment was originally raised by William Cavendish, 4th Earl of Devonshire (later Duke of Devonshire) in his home county of Derbyshire and neighbouring Nottinghamshire - they were named Cavendishs Horse or alternatively the Earl of Devonshires Regiment of Horse.

In gratitude for their loyalty during the Glorious Revolution, by Royal Warrant dated 31st December 1688, the new King William commissioned the Earl of Devonshires Regiment of Horse to form part of his regular army. In August 1689, the Regiment shipped to Ireland in response to James II landing there with an army. In Ireland, the Earl of Devonshire ceded the Colonelcy of the Regiment to the Count de Schomberg, son of the armys commander the Duke of Schomberg.

Schombergs Regiment of Horse formed part of the right wing of Williams army at the Battle of the Boyne (1690). The Regiment returned to England in 1691. 1692 saw the Regiment shipped to Belgium, where they fought in most major battles including the Battle of dOtignies (1693) and at the Siege of Namur (1695). In 1697, the Regiment returned to England and their armour was placed in storage.

After ten years of comparative peace in Southern England, the Regiment crossed the Channel once more in 1702 to join Marlboroughs army in Belgium for the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). Marching to Germany, they fought at Schellenberg and Blenheim (1704). At Blenheim, the Regiment fought with distinction and lost a number of officers and men, with 56 horses killed. Fighting minor actions throughout the campaign in Holland, Germany and France, the Regiment fought the Battle of Ramilies in 1706.

WSS Queen Dowagers Regiment of Foot

WSS Queen Dowagers Regiment of Foot

I have been slowly progressing the second phase of my War of the Spanish Succession project and have just finished another English regiment to add to my collection.  This one represents the Queen Dowagers Regiment of Foot which only saw action in the Low Countries early in the war, in particular serving in the defence of the fortress of Tongres in Flanders after which it was awarded the title “Royal”, and mottoes “Pristinae Virtutis Memor” and “Vel Exuviae Triumphant”.  It then saw more action in Spain.

The figures are 15mm from Black Hat and the flag is from Warflag.

WSS Clares Regiment

WSS Clares Regiment

To supplement my French foot I am starting to add some troops in their pay.  In this case its the first of my Jacobite Irish regiments which formed part of the Irish Brigade originally sent to France in 1690 by King James II in return for French troops and which remained in French service until 1792.

The first unit of Irish is Viscount Clares Regiment who fought at the Battle of Blenheim as part of the Marquis de Rosels Corps near Oberglau and also at the Battle of Ramillies where Lord Clare was mortally wounded.

Once again Black Hat figures with a flag from Warflag.

Originally raised in 1685, Hugh Wyndham became colonel of the regiment in 1692. In 1704 the regiment was at the battle of Blenheim and were present in 1705 when the alliance army broke through the Lines of Brabant. The following year the regiment fought at the battle of Ramillies and participated in the siege of Menin.

WSS Dorringtons Regiment

The second Jacobite Irish unit I am adding to my French troops is William Dorringtons Regiment which was created from the former 1st and 2nd Battalions of King James Royal Irish Foot Guards.  They fought alongside Clares Regiment at the Battle of Blenheim and in a number of other engagements including the Battle of Malplaquet.

As usual the figures are from Black Hat but this time the flag is from Maverick Models.
